New Caledonia is a group of islands in the South Pacific, located about 1,500 km east of Australia and southeast of Papua New Guinea. It is a special collectivity of France with a unique political status and limited autonomy within the French Republic. The main island, Grande Terre, is the largest and most populated, while other important islands include the Loyalty Islands and the Île des Pins. The capital city of New Caledonia is Nouméa, a vibrant port and cultural centre with a mix of Melanesian and French influences. With a population estimated at around 266,000 people, most residents live in urban areas, especially in the south. A range of distinct landscapes — from mountains and rainforests to coral lagoons and sandy beaches — characterise the archipelago. This blend of geography and culture makes New Caledonia a fascinating and diverse Pacific destination.
