Is Mount Rainier an active volcano?

Yes, Mount Rainier is considered an active volcano. It last erupted more than 1,000 years ago. Even though it hasn’t erupted recently, it still shows volcanic activity. Heat and steam exist beneath the surface. Scientists closely monitor the mountain for changes. The biggest risk comes from mudflows called lahars. These could affect nearby valleys if an eruption occurred.
