Jewel Cave is a massive cave system located in western South Dakota. It is part of Jewel Cave National Monument near the town of Custer. The cave is famous for its sparkling calcite crystals that look like jewels. It sits in the Black Hills region, which is known for rugged scenery. Jewel Cave is one of the longest caves in the world by mapped passages. New sections are still being discovered today. Its underground size surprises most first-time visitors.
