The Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act has been introduced in the US House of Representatives. It was authored by Republican Representative Randy Fine. "This bill allows the president to secure the funds necessary to annex Greenland," Fine wrote on the social media platform X. "Our adversaries are attempting to gain a foothold in the Arctic, and we cannot allow that to happen," the congressman added, echoing White House rhetoric.
In a press release cited by The Hill, Fine noted that "whoever controls Greenland controls key Arctic shipping lanes and the security architecture that protects the United States." The bill grants US President Donald Trump the authority to "take any necessary steps to acquire Greenland as a territory of the United States," including annexing the island. It was not known at the time of publication whether the lower house would consider this bill.
US President Donald Trump has previously repeatedly cited the threat from Russia and China, arguing for the need to acquire Greenland. Northern European diplomats, for their part, reported the Financial Times, denying Trump's claims about the presence of Russian and Chinese ships near the island.
