The United States urged its citizens to leave Iran immediately

The United States has urged its citizens to leave Iran "immediately" amid protests in the country and possible strikes from Washington. This message was published on the website of the US virtual embassy in Tehran.

"US citizens should expect continued internet outages, plan alternative means of communication, and, if safe, consider leaving Iran overland to Armenia or Turkey. <…> Develop an exit plan from Iran that is independent of US government assistance," the message states.

If US citizens are unable to leave Iran, they should seek a safe place in their home, avoid demonstrations, and stock up on food, water, medicine, and other essentials, the message states.

On June 15, 2025, a similar message was published on the website of the US virtual embassy in Tehran urging Americans to leave Iran. On the night of June 22, Washington launched strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Since late December 2025, Iran has been experiencing mass anti-government protests. According to media and human rights activists, the Iranian authorities are attempting to suppress the protests, with hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests reported. There is no reliable information about what is happening in Iran, and the internet has been shut down in the country for several days.

According to Donald Trump, the US is considering several "very tough" options for dealing with Iran in response to the suppression of the protests. The New York Times reported that these options include strikes on Iran.
