You generally can’t just walk into the Fukushima Daiichi reactors themselves because the area immediately around the damaged buildings is restricted for safety reasons. Tours and official visits to certain parts of the broader exclusion and revitalization area may exist, but they’re organised and controlled to keep visitors safe. Outside restricted zones, some towns and areas of Fukushima are open for tourism and normal travel. Local guides can sometimes take people to parts of the region that are safe and interesting, like seaside views or revitalized communities. Radiation levels outside restricted areas are regularly monitored and published, so visitors can check official data before planning a trip. Most people find it more meaningful to visit memorials and museums about the disaster rather than the plant itself. If you’re thinking about a visit, booking through an official tour or local tourism authority is the safest way to go.
