Kirkuk has a bunch of fascinating historical places that reflect its long and layered story through time. The Kirkuk Citadel is one of the most iconic spots — a huge ancient mound in the centre of the city with narrow alleys and old buildings on top. Close by is the Ottoman-era Qaysareyah Market, a covered bazaar with a unique design that symbolizes the hours, days and months of the year. Baba Gurgur, just outside the city, has the famous “Eternal Fire,” a natural gas vent that’s been burning for thousands of years and is tied to local folklore. You can also explore ruins like the Red Church, which shows Kirkuk’s early Christian heritage, and other old sites that give you a sense of how many cultures have passed through here. Parks, traditional markets and Ottoman gardens add more variety if you want a blend of outdoor and cultural history. With each stop, you can literally walk through layers of human settlement and architectural styles.
