Valentine’s Day began as a historical and sometimes religious observance, but over time it turned into a big commercial holiday full of gift buying and events. By the 18th and 19th centuries in places like England and the U.S., people started exchanging handmade cards and tokens of affection, which eventually evolved into mass‑produced greeting cards and gifts. Companies realized there was huge interest in sending cards, flowers, chocolates and jewelry around February 14, so they began marketing special products for the day. Today, brands often push Valentine’s promotions weeks before the date, with everything from themed candies to date night packages and luxury items. While some people feel the commercial side can put pressure on relationships, others see it as a chance to make memorable moments. In the end, how much or little you spend is up to you — love and appreciation don’t have to come with a big price tag.
