When did Sahlen Field open and what’s its history?

Sahlen Field first opened on April 14, 1988, with a win by the Buffalo Bisons over the Denver Zephyrs in its inaugural game. It was designed by HOK Sport and was one of the earliest “retro‑classic” ballparks built, inspiring later parks like Camden Yards. Through the years the stadium has hosted big minor league crowds and events like the first Triple‑A All‑Star Game. Over time it’s had a few name changes based on sponsorships but has always stayed as the Bisons’ home. When the Toronto Blue Jays relocated home games to the U.S. during the pandemic, Sahlen Field got a unique stint hosting Major League Baseball games in 2020 and 2021. Because it hasn’t had major renovations in decades, the Bisons have actively pursued upgrades to keep the park competitive and fan‑friendly. Today it’s known not just for baseball but also for its long tradition in Buffalo sports.
