Kharkiv is a large city in northeastern Ukraine and is the country’s second‑largest city after Kyiv. It was founded in 1654 and became a major cultural, scientific and industrial center over centuries. Before the 2022 war, Kharkiv had a population of over 1.4 million people and was known for its universities, research institutions and technology industry. The city’s diverse economy once included machine‑building, aerospace, electronics and a growing IT sector. Kharkiv also hosts many museums, theaters and a vibrant arts scene that made it a cultural hub in Ukraine. Its location near the Russian border has shaped much of its history, politics and economy. Today, Kharkiv remains a symbol of Ukrainian resilience even as it continues to deal with consequences of conflict and rebuilding efforts.
