Is the Corinth Canal open for ships all year?

Not always — the Corinth Canal has periodic closures for maintenance and restoration work, especially because its steep rock walls can be unstable and prone to landslides. Over the past few years it has closed and reopened several times to repair slopes and reinforce embankments so the canal stays safe for navigation. For example, after major landslide damage it closed in 2021 and then reopened for seasonal traffic with further work planned. Authorities sometimes shut the canal altogether for long stretches to finish repair projects that improve safety and long-term stability. While it’s open most of the year to smaller boats and tourist traffic, you’ll want to check current schedules and notices before planning a transit. Maintenance closures usually happen in the off-season to minimise disruption, but they can extend depending on conditions and weather. Because the canal’s operation depends on ongoing engineering work, maritime schedules around it can change.
