Why do ships still use the Corinth Canal today?

Even though it’s too small for many modern big ships, the Corinth Canal is still used by thousands of smaller vessels every year — mostly pleasure boats, tourism cruisers, and some regional commercial traffic. It saves these smaller craft a very long trip around the Peloponnese peninsula by giving them a shortcut of just a few kilometers. Many sightseeing boats go through the canal so passengers can enjoy the experience of seeing the tall limestone walls rising up beside the water. Small cargo ships and yachts find it useful when their size fits the canal’s narrow limits. The route also draws tourists who watch from bridges above or take guided boat tours that highlight the history and scenery. So while it’s not a major freight corridor, it’s still a functional and popular route for smaller maritime traffic and visitors.
