What is the Istanbul Canal and why is Turkey building it?

The Istanbul Canal — also called Kanal İstanbul — is a massive artificial sea‑level waterway that Turkey plans to cut through the European side of Istanbul, linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara without ships having to use the crowded Bosphorus Strait. It will be around 45 km (about 28 miles) long and set up as a parallel route to the Bosphorus for large commercial ships and tankers. Officials say the goal is to reduce traffic congestion, lessen the risk of accidents, and protect the historic Bosphorus area from heavy maritime loads. The canal project is also expected to include new ports, logistics hubs, residential zones, and economic infrastructure along its route. Turkish leaders often describe it as a big prestige and developmental project that could turn Istanbul into a global maritime and logistics hub. However, it’s still controversial — critics argue about its cost, timing, and impacts on the city and environment. The canal has been in planning stages for years and continues to draw intense public debate.
