Why is the Istanbul Canal controversial among locals and experts?

Many locals and technical experts think the money could be better spent on earthquake resilience, public services, transport, or affordable housing rather than such a massive canal. Environmental activists worry about ecosystem damage, loss of natural water resources, and the long‑term health of the Sea of Marmara and surrounding land. Some scientists and city planners also point out that urban expansion around the canal could make Istanbul more vulnerable to flooding or quakes. Politically, critics argue the project is pushed too hard without enough local consensus or transparency about costs and impacts. There’s also concern that promised job growth or economic boosts might not materialise the way supporters claim. Because of all this, public opinion remains deeply split between people who see it as a bold development and those who think it’s reckless or unnecessary.
