Ontario has over 16 million people, making it by far the largest province in Canada in terms of population size. A huge chunk of that population lives in big urban areas, especially in the south around the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, Hamilton, and other cities by the Great Lakes. Over the next few decades, the province is expected to keep growing steadily, with forecasts showing it could reach over 20 million people by around 2051 as migration continues. That growth is mostly due to newcomers moving in, since natural population growth is slowing down. Because of that, Ontario is always changing and getting even more culturally diverse, especially in its major cities. Growing populations mean big planning for homes, schools, hospitals, transit, and jobs to keep up with demand. Overall, Ontario’s population story is one of growth, diversity, and ongoing change.
