What caused construction at 161 Maiden Lane to stop?

Construction at 161 Maiden Lane has been stalled for years because of a mix of technical, financial, and legal problems that piled up over time. Once the lean was discovered partway through the build, contractors and the developer got into lawsuits about who was responsible for the foundation and how to fix it. At the same time, funding for the project ran into trouble, with lenders foreclosing and legal disputes slowing down progress even more. Some work briefly resumed under a new contractor after the lean was disclosed, but then other issues, like removed glass panels and financial disputes, halted things again. Developers had originally hoped to sell luxury condos worth millions, but with all the delays and trouble, most buyers backed out or got stuck in legal fights. Because of all of that, the building remains an unfinished shell on the skyline rather than a finished residential tower. As a result, no one really knows when — or if — construction will start up again to complete the tower as originally planned.
