The land around 161 Maiden Lane has a long history going back to early New York City, and it sits on ground that used to be marshland and part of the extended shoreline, which made foundation work tricky. Originally, developers bought the site and planned a mixed-use tower there, with different designs floated before the current skyscraper project took shape. Fortis Property Group eventually developed the plan for a tall residential tower with luxury amenities, and construction kicked off in the 2010s with a contractor that later ended up in court. The building was designed to rise 60 stories and include high-end condos, a spa, fitness spaces, and more, overlooking the East River. All that was supposed to make it a premium part of Manhattan living, but the choice of foundation technique and other problems changed that story. Along the way, there was a tragic on-site accident in 2017 where a worker died, and multiple lawsuits have involved contractors, buyers, and lenders. Instead of becoming a new landmark of luxury living, the project is now better known for its lean and stalled status.
