Why was Lincoln Memorial Stadium originally built?

Memorial Stadium was built in the early 1920s to provide a larger home for Nebraska football and to honor Nebraskans who served in the military. The stadium’s name was chosen as a tribute to those who died in World War I and later conflicts. Construction began in 1923 and the first game at the stadium took place later that year. The original structure cost less than half a million dollars to build, which was a huge investment at the time. Over the decades the stadium expanded far beyond its original design. Despite the many renovations, parts of the original structure still remain today. The memorial purpose behind the stadium’s name remains an important part of its history and identity.
