Yes — one of the coolest things about Stromboli is that you can often see its frequent volcanic bursts from boats in the sea or even from some of the coastal areas at night when the glowing flashes light up the summit. Lots of visitors take sunset or nighttime boat tours around the island specifically to watch the glowing lava bursts from a safe distance on the water, which can be pretty spectacular. The flashes and sounds of activity are often visible from other nearby Aeolian Islands like Panarea or Salina on clear nights, making them popular spots to watch from a different perspective. Naturally, safety is the number one priority, so boats stay well beyond the danger zone of falling rock and ash, but still close enough for a great view. During the day you can see smoke plumes and darker rock flows more easily, and guides point out what’s happening with the volcano’s activity. Since the eruptions are frequent but small, you don’t usually need perfect timing — chances are good you’ll see something on any given night. Just remember to bring a camera or binoculars if you want close‑up shots from the sea or coastal viewpoints — the views can be unforgettable.
