Yes, Lake Erie is the Great Lake most likely to freeze over during winter because it’s so shallow compared to the others. In really cold years, large portions of the lake — and sometimes almost all of it — can be covered in ice. The shallow water loses heat faster, which makes freezing happen more easily than in deeper lakes like Lake Ontario. Ice coverage can change a lot year to year depending on how cold the winter gets. In some winters, only parts of the lake freeze, especially near the shores and in the western basin. The ice can affect shipping, fishing, and even local weather patterns around the lake. It’s one of the reasons Lake Erie behaves differently from the other Great Lakes.
