Swimming in the Salton Sea is generally not recommended because of the water quality and changing environmental conditions. The water is much saltier than the Pacific Ocean, making it uncomfortable for many people. Fishing opportunities are much more limited today than they were decades ago because many fish species have disappeared. Some fish can still be found in certain areas, but populations continue to change as the lake becomes saltier. Local fishing regulations should always be checked before casting a line. Most visitors now come for birdwatching, photography, and exploring the unique desert landscape instead of water recreation. The Salton Sea remains an interesting destination even though swimming and fishing are no longer its biggest attractions.
