Why is the Salton Sea important to wildlife?

The Salton Sea is one of the most important resting and feeding areas for migratory birds in the western United States. Millions of birds use the area each year as they travel along the Pacific Flyway. Pelicans, herons, egrets, and many shorebirds can often be seen around the shoreline and nearby wetlands. Even though the ecosystem faces serious environmental problems, it still provides valuable habitat for many species. Conservation projects are working to create wetlands that support birds while reducing dust from the exposed lakebed. Scientists continue to study the area because of its importance to both wildlife and public health. Protecting the Salton Sea remains an important goal for conservation groups and government agencies.
