Mar-a-Lago: the story of a private resort in Florida
Posted on Oct 21, 2024 / Celebs
Mar-a-Lago is a private club and estate located in Palm Beach, Florida. The estate was built by the American businesswoman and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1927.
The mansion and its accompanying buildings were designed by the architect Joseph Urban in the Mediterranean Revival style, and feature a variety of luxurious amenities such as a private beach, a spa, and a golf course.
After Marjorie Merriweather Post's death, the estate passed through several owners before being purchased by the businessman and former President of the United States, Donald Trump, in 1985. Trump converted the estate into a private club and named it "Mar-a-Lago," which means "Sea-to-Lake" in Spanish.
Since then, Mar-a-Lago has been used by Trump as a winter White House, a vacation spot, and a venue for events and fundraisers. Also, it has become a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the opulence and glamour of Palm Beach.
Mar-a-Lago has been in the spotlight for several reasons, particularly because it was used as a place to hold meetings and events by Trump and his administration during his presidency.
After Trump left office, he has not lived at Mar-a-Lago permanently, but he continues to visit frequently. The estate is still a private club and it is not open to the public, but visitors can take guided tours of the property when the President is not in residence.
