In Germany, Christian Democrats and Social Democrats announced the formation of a ruling coalition.

Representatives of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) presented a coalition agreement prepared six weeks after the parliamentary elections, Der Spiegel reported on April 9.

The press conference in Berlin, at which the parties announced the new coalition agreement, was attended by CDU leader Friedrich Merz, who will head the future government coalition, Bavarian Prime Minister and CSU leader Markus Söder, as well as SPD co-chairs Saskia Esken and Lars Klingbeil.

The parties have prepared an agreement called "Responsibility for Germany" ("Verantwortung für Deutschland"). The document consists of 146 pages including the title page. As Der Spiegel notes, the parties initially wanted to agree only on a cost-effective coalition agreement, "and not regulate every detail." "We have hard work ahead of us," Merz said when presenting the agreement. According to him, the coalition "will lead our country forward." He also noted that the formation of the coalition should send a clear signal to German citizens and partners in the European Union that Germany has a "government that is capable and able to act."

According to Der Spiegel, the SPD will begin voting on the coalition agreement on the morning of April 15 and will last until the evening of April 29. After the SPD members approve the agreement, the process of electing a chancellor and forming a government will begin.

The conservative CDU/CSU bloc took first place in the early Bundestag elections held in February. The far-right Alternative for Germany party came in second, and the Social Democratic Party came in third.
