The Golden Gate Bridge stretches about 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) across the strait, making it one of the longest suspension bridges ever built. Its main span between the two towers is approximately 4,200 feet (1,280 meters), which was a record at the time of completion. The towers themselves soar 746 feet (227 meters) above the water, making them taller than the Washington Monument. The bridge’s roadway is about 220 feet (67 meters) above the water at its highest point, allowing large ships to pass underneath. These dimensions contribute not only to the bridge’s functionality but also to its iconic silhouette against the San Francisco skyline. Walking or biking across offers spectacular views of the city, bay, and ocean. The scale and elegance of the structure continue to impress engineers and visitors alike.
