The Golden Gate Bridge wasn’t golden at all—it’s painted “International Orange.” It was the world’s longest suspension bridge when completed in 1937. Engineers doubted it could survive the powerful tides and fogs of the Bay. Over 600,000 rivets were used in each tower. It can sway up to 27 feet in strong winds. The bridge is repainted continuously, not all at once. It spans 1.7 miles across the Golden Gate Strait. The distinctive color was chosen to enhance visibility in fog.
