Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge began in 1933 during the Great Depression and was completed in 1937, ahead of schedule and under budget. It was built to provide a direct connection between San Francisco and Marin County, replacing a slow and sometimes dangerous ferry service. The project was considered an engineering marvel at the time due to the challenging conditions, including strong currents, deep water, and frequent fog. Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer, but many others contributed to its innovative design and construction. The bridge’s completion symbolized hope and progress during tough economic times. Today, it remains one of the most photographed and admired bridges worldwide. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1964.
