Who gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States?

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States in 1886. It was intended to celebrate the friendship between the two nations and to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, while Gustave Eiffel (yes, the same Eiffel) engineered its internal structure.
