Why is the Statue of Liberty green?

The Statue of Liberty is made of copper, and over time, exposure to air and moisture caused a natural chemical reaction called oxidation. This reaction formed a green patina that now covers the statue. Interestingly, the green layer actually protects the copper underneath from further corrosion, so it’s both beautiful and functional.
