What is the Trianon Estate?

The Trianon Estate is a separate area of the Versailles grounds that includes the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, and the Queen’s Hamlet. These buildings were used by French royalty as private retreats away from the formal court life of the main palace. The Grand Trianon was built by Louis XIV, while the Petit Trianon was gifted to Marie Antoinette by Louis XVI. The Queen’s Hamlet is a picturesque rustic village built for Marie Antoinette to simulate peasant life. These structures reveal a more intimate and personal side of royal life. The estate is quieter and often less crowded than the main palace.
