The Palace of Versailles started as a humble hunting lodge before becoming one of the most extravagant royal residences in the world. It has over 2,300 rooms, including the dazzling Hall of Mirrors. The gardens of Versailles cover 800 hectares and feature 50 fountains. It was the seat of political power in France until the French Revolution. The Treaty of Versailles, ending World War I, was signed in the Hall of Mirrors. It took over 50 years to complete the entire palace complex. Versailles is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by millions annually.
