What is the winter solstice event at Newgrange?

Each year, around December 21st, the rising sun aligns perfectly with the roof-box above the entrance to Newgrange. This alignment allows sunlight to enter the passage and illuminate the inner chamber for about 17 minutes. This phenomenon demonstrates the builders' deep understanding of solar cycles and is a key reason the site draws thousands of visitors each year. Access to the chamber on solstice mornings is limited and determined by lottery.
