What is the Wailing Wall or ha-Kotel?

The Wailing Wall, also known as the Western Wall or ha-Kotel (הכותל המערבי in Hebrew), is a revered Jewish religious site located in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is the last remaining part of the Second Jewish Temple, which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. The wall itself was originally a retaining wall supporting the Temple Mount. Today, it is a place of pilgrimage and prayer for Jews around the world and is considered one of the holiest sites in Judaism.
