Angel Falls was named after Jimmy Angel, an American aviator who flew over the falls in 1933 while searching for a gold ore bed. In 1937, his plane crashed atop Auyán-tepui, and the story of his survival and descent with his crew drew worldwide attention. The falls were officially named in his honor, although the indigenous Pemon name for the falls is "Kerepakupai Merú."
