What makes the Brooklyn Bridge historically significant?

The Brooklyn Bridge was the first fixed crossing over the East River and the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion. It was also one of the first bridges to use steel for its cable wires and a pioneering project in the use of caisson construction. Its opening marked a major advancement in engineering and urban development. It played a key role in unifying Brooklyn and Manhattan before Brooklyn officially became part of New York City in 1898. Its inclusion in countless works of art, film, and literature has further cemented its place in cultural history.
