The Kitora Tomb is one of the few ancient Japanese tombs with fully preserved murals, including the famous Four Symbols representing the cardinal directions. The tomb’s murals use vivid pigments made from minerals, which have remarkably retained their color over centuries. Excavations revealed traces of lacquer and gold, indicating the high status of the tomb’s occupant. The tomb is part of the Asuka Historical Park, which includes other significant burial sites from the same period. Researchers have used digital imaging to study the murals without causing damage. The Kitora Tomb continues to provide insight into Asuka-period culture, art, and astronomy.
