The Kitora Tomb was rediscovered in 1983 during a survey of the Asuka region. Excavations revealed its remarkable murals, including depictions of constellations, animals, and mythological figures. The tomb had been sealed and largely undisturbed for more than a thousand years. The discovery offered scholars an unprecedented look at Asuka-period art and cosmology. Conservation efforts began soon after to preserve the fragile wall paintings. It quickly became a focal point for archaeological and historical research in Japan.
