What kind of murals are in the Kitora Tomb?

The tomb is famous for its elaborate murals, which include celestial, animal, and mythological imagery. Notably, it contains depictions of the Four Symbols: the Azure Dragon, Vermilion Bird, White Tiger, and Black Tortoise, representing the cardinal directions in East Asian cosmology. There are also star maps painted on the ceiling, making it one of the oldest known astronomical murals in Japan. The walls feature images of dancers and attendants, illustrating cultural practices of the period. The vibrant colors and detailed lines have survived remarkably well. The murals offer insight into early Japanese beliefs, art, and astronomy.
