The Keeper of the Plains stands 44 feet tall and weighs approximately 5 tons, making it an impressive steel sculpture. The statue was created in 1974 by artist Blackbear Bosin and has become Wichita’s most recognizable landmark. It sits at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers, symbolizing the spiritual connection between the Plains tribes and the land. The surrounding Plaza of the Keeper features the famous "Rings of Fire," which are illuminated at night for a dramatic effect. The statue has inspired local art, cultural events, and educational programs. It is a popular photography and tourist destination, drawing visitors from across the country. The Keeper continues to honor Native American heritage and the history of the Great Plains region.
