The Crazy Horse Memorial is planned to be the largest mountain sculpture in the world, dwarfing Mount Rushmore.
The carving of Crazy Horse’s face alone was completed in 1998, and work continues on the horse and rider.
The project has been ongoing since 1948 and is funded entirely by private donations and ticket sales, with no government funding.
The site includes the Indian Museum of North America, which houses artifacts from hundreds of Native American tribes.
Korczak Ziolkowski, the sculptor, began the project after being personally invited by Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear to honor Crazy Horse.
The memorial emphasizes Native American culture and education, hosting cultural events and programs for students and visitors.
