Saint Basil’s Cathedral was built between 1555 and 1561 under Ivan the Terrible’s orders.
Its official name is the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat.
The cathedral consists of nine separate chapels connected in one complex design.
Each dome has a different design and color, symbolizing heaven and unity.
It is said Ivan the Terrible blinded the architects so they could never create anything similar again (a legend, not a proven fact).
The cathedral survived Napoleon’s invasion, who allegedly wanted to move it to Paris but failed.
It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 as part of Moscow’s Kremlin and Red Square.
Despite being called “Saint Basil’s,” the cathedral was named after Saint Basil the Blessed, a holy fool of Moscow.
