Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world, reaching a maximum depth of about 1,642 meters (5,387 feet). Its average depth is around 744 meters (2,442 feet). This extreme depth allows it to store a massive volume of freshwater and maintain unique water layers. Baikal’s deep waters are home to endemic species and support a diverse aquatic ecosystem. The lake’s depth also influences its climate, keeping the water cold even during summer months.
