Lake Baikal is home to more than 1,700 species of plants and animals, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Notable species include the Baikal seal, known as the nerpa, and the omul fish. The lake supports numerous endemic invertebrates, algae, and plankton species. Its unique ecosystem has been shaped by millions of years of isolation. Scientists study Lake Baikal to understand evolution, freshwater ecology, and climate impacts.
