Zanzibar has a long history influenced by different civilizations, including the Persians, Arabs, Indians, and Europeans. It was a major hub for the spice trade and a center of the East African slave trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the late 19th century, Zanzibar became a British protectorate before uniting with Tanganyika in 1964 to form modern Tanzania. Its history is reflected in Stone Town’s architecture and cultural diversity. This legacy makes Zanzibar both historically significant and culturally rich.
