Nauru is the world’s third smallest country by land area, after Vatican City and Monaco.
It is also the second smallest by population, after Vatican City.
Nauru has no official capital city, with Yaren District serving as the de facto capital.
The island’s phosphate once made Nauru one of the richest nations per capita in the 1970s.
The entire island can be driven around in about 30 minutes on its coastal road.
Fishing is an important tradition, and tuna is a major part of the local diet.
Nauru does not have a standing military and relies on Australia for defense.
The national sport is weightlifting, and Nauru has produced champion lifters despite its small size.
