Historically, Nauru’s economy was dominated by phosphate mining, which once made it one of the richest countries per capita. However, over-mining depleted the phosphate reserves and damaged much of the island’s interior. Today, Nauru relies on a mix of limited phosphate exports, aid from other countries, and hosting offshore processing centers for asylum seekers. Fishing rights in its large exclusive economic zone also contribute to revenue. The economy faces challenges, but Nauru continues to adapt through regional partnerships. Tourism remains small due to its remote location and limited infrastructure.
