The Caspian is surprisingly deep in the south, plunging down to over 3,300 feet (about 1,000 meters). The north part, though, is super shallow—sometimes only a few feet deep in places. This big difference in depth makes the sea feel like two totally different worlds. The shallow northern areas freeze in winter, while the southern part stays liquid year-round. That variety in depth and climate helps create all kinds of habitats for fish and wildlife.
