Why is the Caspian Sea called a sea if it’s actually a lake?

That’s one of the biggest confusions about the Caspian. Technically, it’s the largest lake in the world because it doesn’t connect to the world’s oceans. But since it’s so massive, with salty water and waves like the ocean, people have been calling it a “sea” for centuries. It covers more than 140,000 square miles, bigger than most actual seas. So, it’s both: a sea by tradition, and a lake by geography. Locals just stick with calling it the Caspian Sea because that’s what everyone knows it as.
