The Beacon opened in 1929 as a movie palace and soon became a big part of Manhattan’s entertainment scene. Its interior is officially landmarked and the theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so a lot of the original decorative plasterwork, murals, and the rotunda lobby are protected. Over the decades it’s shifted from movies to live shows, with several renovations that kept the historic look while updating the backstage and technical bits. That mix of old glamour and modern production capability is exactly why artists love playing there.
