Does altitude hit hard in Bolivia?

Yes—the high-altitude cities like La Paz (over 11,000 feet) can knock you sideways with altitude sickness. Plenty of travelers take a day or two to adjust before doing anything active, and sipping coca tea is a traditional go-to for that. Staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol on day one, and going slow are smart moves. If you feel seriously off, best bet is to drop in elevation until you feel better. But most folks acclimate just fine with a little care.
